Hymn Collective

Hymns for the Church, by the Church

New Resources page!

I know it's been a while since we've made changes or added anything to our site, but we're still here and we're still working very hard to get this whole thing off the ground. Our vision for the Hymn Collective is big and ambitious and, frankly, a little scary (purely from a "how are we actually going to do this" perspective; no monsters or anything).

One of our first steps to making all of this happens to create this new "resources" page on our website. On this page, you will find the very beginnings of a large, curated list of hymns and arrangements that have been used with repeated success in congregational settings.

We are very fortunate to be closely associated with Red Mountain Church, a PCA church in Birmingham, AL. Music at RMC as always been exclusively hymns, either re-tuned hymns or modern arrangements of traditional hymns. As a result, we have a access to a large database of hymns that have been used with success in worship services. Also in that database are a lot hymns with which we have not had success, so we know what not to include in this list...

We hope to serve the Church and other music leaders by making these proven resources freely available. We believe cost should not be a deterrent to discovery. We want to be supported by people and churches that love hymns and share our vision, not through product sales.

We hope that Churches find these resources accessible for their congregations. Ultimately, we are focused on the singing Church and we want to provide music that works for any congregation.

We hope that musicians find these hymns and arrangements adaptable to their own unique situations. Fundamentally, these hymns are about the texts and melodies that deliver them. Our resources are simple lead sheets and chord sheets, bereft of style or complicated arrangements and confined to one page. We view these sheets as a template or framework for the hymns to be used however the musician or church see fit.

We know that discovering and trying our new music can be a frustrating and time consuming process. We hope to help alleviate some of that stress and frustration by providing the resources the we use week in and week out with success.

Right now, our Resources page contains most of the traditional hymn arrangements and Hymn Collective re-tuned hymns currently in use at RMC. Eventually, we'll be adding some of the other hymns that we use from such sources as Red Mountain Music and Indelible Grace.

This will never be an exhaustive list of re-tuned hymns, just a list of things we know work. If you are a hymn writer/re-tuner and would like us to consider your work for inclusion, please let us know. We truly love hymns and discovering new music, and would love to connect with you.

Also, come to one of our monthly "Hymn Sessions". We meet the first Monday of every month at Red Mountain Church. We think of this as our "test kitchen" for hymns and ideas where we try out new things and get feedback from other musicians about what works and what doesn't. Our next Session is Monday April 4, 7pm.
